Journal #6: Crazy Brave: Humble But Strong

Joy Harjo, through her book Crazy Brave, is telling the story of her child hood life, her traditions, culture, ancestors, and the struggles she has had to experience.

Through her book, despite all she has gone through, Joy was able to show herself a the strong woman that she was, and she still is today. The way the book is written, I was shocked to find that she wrote in a way that was to tell a story and inform, but not to try and gain pity. I do not believe that the intentions of the writings are to have more people feel sorry for Joy and all she had experienced in the past, but rather to inform others to know what is going on in some cultures, in some homes. I do believe that Joy has misrepresented the fact that she, in fact, is a strong woman. Somehow the book Joy wrote about herself does not highlight her achievements, she does not boast or brag. This is her life and this is how she lived it. In the story Joy tells of the sea monster, she gives up many things for this hypothetical monster, this just shows Joy's big heart and how she will put others before herself in a heartbeat. Another example of Joy's love and caring is whenever she talks about bringing up her child. A mother's love is the only way to explain how Joy felt for her child. Joy is an amazing person, humble, but strong beyond all things she went through to get where she is today.
